"I will take the gun," he answered when ordered to stand sentry duty, "but I will not use it. If I am approached by someone who will not stop when challenged, I will not shoot him. Jesus said,'They who take the sword will perish with the sword.'"

– L.T. Nichols, Autobiography

Only 2 weeks after the marriage, Nichols was drafted into the army. Based on his convictions of Bible teachings, he refused to kill his fellowmen. He would work, he would obey any ordor which did not violate his conscience. But he positively would not bear arms or take a life.

When his life was threatened because of his stand, he appealed to President Lincoln and was allowed to serve in a military hospital.
