1st: Babylon

Vision of the Great Image—Daniel 2
Head of Gold

Daniel identified Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom with these words: “You are this head of gold” (Dan. 2:38). Under Nebuchadnezzar and his successors, the Babylonian Empire extended its authority through the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin with speed and power from the time the prophecy was made (about 605 BC) until its downfall in 539 BC.

Four Beasts—Daniel 7
Winged Lion

What was the first beast like? “The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings” (Dan. 7:4). The picture is of a powerful, often ruthless, rapidly conquering nation, a meaningful description of the nation of Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar.

Ishtar Gate of Babylon (reconstructed)
The Processional Way into Babylon Passed through the Ishtar Gate. The surface of the gate was decorated with moulded images of bulls, lions, and dragons made of enamelled bricks.
Each brick was fabricated with a number showing its exact position in the finished structure.
